SEEKING:

[AURELIE] Female, Caucasian, 11 – 14. Flat-chested, insecure, observant, keenly aware of her looks, Aurelie has been raised on an Air Force base until now.  About to attend a new school, she insists on getting a permanent, a decision that proves disastrous when her money-strapped folks (Jeanne and Jim) take her to a beauty school. Horrified by the untamable Poodle-like mess atop her head, an already nervous Aurelie is panicked about the first day of school, and finds it difficult to make friends.  Quickly ostracized by the popular crowd, but galvanized by her often-bumbling dad and the fighting words of her new karate instructor, Aurelie is doing her best to make a go of things.

[LYDIA] Female, African American, 11 – 13. She is a tough, dynamic, secretly vulnerable and often angry young teen girl, ridiculed by her classmates. Filled with resentment and joy, Lydia is a fighter who has the dramatic power to emotionally move people to tears when she decides to recite a poem in front of the entire school.

[BRETT] Male, Caucasian, 12 – 14.  A charming hooligan of a southern boy, perhaps held back a year or two in school. Brett has not been exposed to much in the world and finds Aurelie fascinating. Sometimes gross, with an underlying charm, he hopes to win Aurelie over who is repelled by his yucky sex talk yet also pleased by his attention.

[JERRY] Male, Caucasian, Late 50s – 70s. A very old man with a head of white hair, Jerry is an oddity – a touchy feely guy in a middle-of-nowhere southern town. He possesses a kind of mystical quality and enjoys playing records of whale mating calls. An offbeat oddball, Jerry has been around – and been alone – a long time. He probably reads a lot of the New Yorker, all by himself. He is Jeanne and Jim’s neighbor and makes a bold pass at a flattered, but ultimately unnerved Jeanne. An expert qualified in nothing, he offers free counseling services to troubled families.

[SALLY] Female, Caucasian, 20s – 40s. Sally is a confident beauty school student, determined to educate herself after having 5 children. She is trying to look stylish but not succeeding, wearing a lot of lip gloss. She probably smokes too. She assures Aurelie that she’s done plenty of perms, but her laziness and lack of attention to detail result in a frizz-fest for a horrified Aurelie.  Southern and genuinely tacky without being too broad.
