should you use a prop in your audition?
So, you’re received sides for an audition and the action includes a prop. Should you audition with it?
First, is the audition live or self-submission via tape?
If the audition is live, in front of a casting director, director, and/or producer, you can and should let them know that you have prepared with a prop and that you’d like to use your prop in the scene.
If you are putting yourself on tape, ask yourself: do I really need this prop? If you know your action, your audition will communicate that, and the casting director and director are also familiar with the script.
The bottom line is that props can distract from an audition, so be honest with yourself about whether the prop is really supporting your character. If the answer is yes, make sure the spotlight is on your performance, and that the prop is (literally) not obscuring you – it should never be in front of your face and does not need to be in frame for your entire audition.
The most important thing to remember, in all cases, is that it is your performance that the casting director wants to see, and nothing should distract from that.
